Budget mowers without vision rely on bump sensors, which means they physically contact the animal before redirecting.

That said, even vision-equipped mowers are not foolproof with very small animals (hedgehogs, kittens, tortoises). Best practice: supervise the first few mows to understand your mower behavior patterns, then schedule mowing when pets are supervised or indoors.
