How Does a Robot Mower Avoid Obstacles?

Modern robot mowers use three layers of obstacle detection. Bump sensors (physical contact) are the most basic and slowest to react. Ultrasonic sensors detect objects at close range (6-12 inches) and redirect before contact.

AI vision cameras (found on the M10 and similar premium models) identify objects at 3-6 feet and plan a path around them. Vision-based systems recognize garden hoses, toys, shoes, and pets before getting close. No system is perfect though.

Small, flat objects like sticks or dog waste will still get run over.
